The Results

A majority (91%) of snack/candy processors expect to launch between 1 and 10 products in 2010. For most, this represents a significant increase in product launches over current year (2009) levels. Chocolate and candy products are expected to be under the heaviest development in 2010 (with over ½ of reporting as a product development area), while two-in-ten will focus on snack foods and fewer than one-in-ten (6%) anticipate focusing efforts on gum products.

The data indicate that snack/candy processors will be focused on developing products with healthy, and natural attributes in 2010, while also maintaining focus on consumer convenience. The use of natural flavors and ingredients in snack/candy products is expected to increase by most (62%) processors in the coming year while fortified, organic, and low sugar/sugar free traits are thought to be of low need/interest to consumers.

Interestingly, half of the processors surveyed report consumer demand for “greener” attributes from new products. To address this demand, most will focus on developing recyclable packaging while others plan to develop new packaging all together.
